Activist Collective Claims to Have Extracted Countless of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

An activist group has claimed to have scraped a vast number of tracks from Spotify and is preparing to publish them online.

Potential Impetus for AI Development

Industry experts noted the seeming leak could boost artificial intelligence firms searching for data to train their models.

A group called Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of metadata such as performer and album names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the leak did not constitute its full catalog.

“We have located and deactivated the malicious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” stated a company representative.

The Stockholm-based company, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, added that an inquiry into unauthorized access found a third party collected public metadata and employed questionable tactics to circumvent DRM protections.

Group's Stated Mission and Worries

Spotify does not believe the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for offering links to pirated books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group asserted the audio files accounted for 99.6% of all music listened to by its listeners and would be distributed via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a means of sharing large data files online.

“Naturally the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “preserving humanity’s information and heritage”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Debate

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ copyright, said the breached music would likely be used for developing artificial intelligence systems.

“Educating models on illegally sourced data is sadly common in the tech sector, so this stolen music is highly likely to be used instructing AI models,” he said.

The group's website makes references to a large online archive, a huge online repository of pirated books that has reportedly been leveraged by the parent company of Facebook to develop its AI models.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on the professional network that members of the public could in theory “create their own private free version of the service”. The executive added it could also allow tech companies to “educate models on contemporary music at a large volume”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a key issue between artists, writers and creatives on one side and AI companies on the other.

Government Proposals and Reactions

Across Britain, creative professionals have raised concerns against a government proposal to let AI companies use copyright-protected work without consent unless the owner opts out. Virtually every participant to a government consultation on the proposal has supported artists’ concerns.

A government minister for science, innovation and development informed parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The government has pledged to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
