Elon Musk's online platform X has sparked major outrage after users used its AI chatbot Grok to manipulate pictures of females by removing their attire.
Numerous cases have been seen where the system has been employed to remove clothing from women to show them in swimwear without consent, as well as to put them in inappropriate contexts.
XAI, the firm responsible for Grok, remained silent to requests for comment, other than an auto-reply message stating "legacy media lies".
A government official stated that legislation is being introduced to outlaw image stripping technology. Under a new criminal offence, anyone who distributed such tools would "receive a prison sentence and significant penalties".
"The platform has the ability to stop these types of misuse if they chose to," said Clare McGlynn, adding they "operate with a lack of consequences."
The regulator Ofcom said platforms must "assess the potential" of people accessing unlawful material on their services, but stopped short of confirming whether it was currently examining X or Grok in concerning AI-generated pictures.
Grok is a free AI assistant—with some additional functions—which reacts to X users' prompts when they tag it in a tweet.
It is often used to give commentary or additional background to other users' remarks, but people on X are also capable of edit an uploaded photo through its artificial intelligence picture modification feature.
The system has been faulted for enabling users to produce photos and clips with explicit content and sexualised content, and it was in the past accused of generating graphic material of public figures.
"The platform has been allowing the creation and spread of these images for a long time without taking any action and we have not seen any action by oversight bodies," the expert added.
XAI's own usage rules prohibits "showing images of persons in a pornographic way".
In a statement, Ofcom said it was illegal to "create or distribute non-consensual intimate images or child sexual abuse material" and confirmed this included explicit AI images made with AI.
It said services such as X were obligated to take "appropriate steps" to "minimize the danger" of users encountering illegal content on their services and to remove it promptly when they learn of it.
