The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
