Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology — The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

Whether a ball has double-bounced.
If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
